Diabetes
research has come a long way since the 1920s, when
Frederick Banting found a way to isolate and use animal insulin
in the treatment of humans with diabetes. Better insulins, home
glucose monitoring, and the insulin pump are just some of the
advancements that have grown out of diabetes research in the last
80 years. Today, scientists are learning more about what causes
diabetes, how to prevent it, and how to cure it.
The
list of research contributors is long. It includes organizations
like the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), American
Diabetes Association (ADA), academic research facilities, pharmaceutical
companies like Eli Lilly, and medical supply manufacturers like
Medtronic. Private donors, large organizations and government
groups help fund this continued research.
